Reflexology is a fascinating therapy which involves a specific type of massage to the feet or hands. This is a pressure point type caterpillar movement performed using the thumbs and fingers (some variations do use hands, knuckles and even elbows). This pressure point massage is applied in a specific order over set points, this is due to the fact that each part of the foot relates to a different part of the body so by stimulating these different reflex points we can help the body repair, rest and relax and remove waste from the body more efficiently.
It's origins go all the way back to ancient Egypt and China, but reflexology as we use it today was developed during the first part of the 20th Century by Dr William Fitzgerald and Mrs Eunice Ingham. It was first discovered through studies with hospital patients suffering from pain could have their pain lessened in some cases by applying pressure to a different part of the body. Slowly the understanding grew that systems in the body were linked. A map was devised which split the body into 10 different longitudinal Zones, which is where the precursor to reflexology came from, Zone Therapy. These zones ran in equal bands from finger to brain from brain to toe with the theory that any organ or body part in that zone could have a direct effect on any other organ or body part in the same zone.
This idea was then refined to just focusing on treating the 10 zones on the feet as this could still treat the whole person due to the link to the rest of the body, which is when it came to be known as reflexology as we know it today
Reflexology can be very effective in alleviating the symptoms of many different conditions such as arthritis, constipation, vertigo, headaches, stress, tension and general pain control. Also from a simple standpoint it's is a non invasive, relaxing treatment, you only need remove your shoes and it can be easily combined with other treatments such as massage.
