There are such a wonderful array of jobs within our modern society. Architect, doctor, dancer, builder, waitress, solicitor, hairdresser... Massage therapist! The list goes on.
But with each profession we may choose to follow there comes all the demands not just on our mind but on our body. And this is often something we are not encouraged to notice or keep an eye on. If you think about it the average full time jobs is for around 40 hours a week, this a huge portion of your life time doing this work but also using your body in a certain way.
I touched on this in my last blog post talking about repetitive strain injury. But this is more about general awareness and taking care of the one place you always have to live, your body!
The most common issues I tend to come across in my job are people with neck and shoulder issues, followed by lower back pain. This can be caused by numerous things, but what someone does for a living is always a big factor in how I work out what is causing the problem.
Hairdressers always holding their arms up and hands steady, using hairdryers, brushing, combing cutting all day. Builders, you lift heavy things, perform jobs at awkward angles, on your feet all day. Dancer? That's some wonderful footwork you have there, but it's an awfully physical process you put your body through day in day out. Then we have the office workers, all those researchers, bankers, phone operators, solicitors, analysts etc. stuck at your desk for all that time? Your body isn't meant to be so still for so long. And let's not forget the lorry drivers and cabbies of this world, hours behind the wheel without so much as standing up.
My message is pretty simple, really whatever your walk of life take everyone could benefit from massage and soft tissue therapy in order to make that walk a little easier.
