AROMATHERAPY

3/11/14

More and more people are turning to natural therapies to treat simple common ailments themselves. Aromatherapy is the use of concentrated plant essences blended together to help the mood and emotion but also alleviate physical symptoms.
Obviously we are all affected by smells around us and the olfactory nerve in the nose, when stimulated by the scents it is exposed to passes information along to the brain. This is how essential oils effect the mood. For example the smell of cut grass may make you feel calm and think of sunny afternoons.

Essential oils are also made up of chemicals which can have a physiological effect on the body, which could be to help lower blood pressure, help you sleep, calm the digestive system, or have an antibacterial or anti fungal effect amongst countless others.
So when therapists practise aromatherapy, we look at your physical and emotional well being, and also the smells you like and dislike and decide which oils to blend in order for you to gain the most benefit from the treatment.

With massage the chosen oils are blended with a base oil, as they are so concentrated we only use drops of them which must be diluted, apart from lavender and tea tree oil which can be used neat on the skin. (See post from 17/09)
Then we normally use this blend in a soothing massage to help you unwind while the essential oils soak into the skin (about 20mins for them to reach the blood stream ). But using an essential oil blend can be a great benefit as an addition to sports massage and deep tissue work also.
Also for complaints such as coughs, colds, sore throats and chest infections certain oils like eucalyptus and ravensara can be added to steam inhalations and be absorbed into the body that way.

So this should give you some idea of how aromatherapy works and the great range of benefits that it can give you, if you have any questions about this or any other posts then please feel free to call me for a chat or email me
