Are you reading this in bed with your iPad on your lap? Or curled up on the sofa reading on your phone? Take a minute to think about the shape you body is in. Can you feel the pull in your neck as your head is hanging forward, maybe a slight ache in your lower back when you uncurl from the sofa and stand up.
How you sit, stand and do small day to day things can have a huge impact on the way your body is aligned and how much strain there is on certain muscle groups. I'm not saying that you should spend for ever more perched bolt upright on the edge of your seat, but if you suffer from an ache in your shoulder that is hard to shift, or your lower back niggles at you after a long day at your desk, then of course massage can help, but it's the little things you do everyday that will make a difference.
So take a minute now, sit up a little straighter, if your head is dropping forward while you read this, just change your position so your head is more upright, uncurl a little so your spine is straighter.
If you are stuck for long periods of time at your desk then sit with your back straight and supported, make sure your keyboard and screen are at the right height for you. Take regular breaks, and stretch! Move your body when you can, take time to stand up, circle your arms, try and touch your toes.
Yoga and Pilates can work wonders for your posture, helping you to be more aware of your body so you hold it in better alignment. Also the Alexander technique is a great way of learning different exercises and tools to teach your body better habits.
