Core Strength

4/05/16

So today I'm going to talk a little bit about core strength/stability. I'm not a personal trainer, so I won't be giving out lots of exercises for you to try I just want to point out a few of the reasons why it is so important.

Core stability is described as follows "Core Stability relates to the bodily region bounded by the abdominal wall, the pelvis, the lower back and the diaphragm , spinal extensor muscle and its ability to stabilise the body during movement."

So as you may gather from that little sentence core stability is pretty much all about keeping your body stable during movement but also when standing and sitting too.

A lot of the people that I treat suffer with various aches and pains through their neck, shoulders and back, and a lot of these people drive a lot, sit at a desk a lot and generally don't have great posture while doing these things! Poor posture while we sit and stand makes us slump and can lead to weaker core muscles which in turn leads to less stability, our back has to work harder to keep us stable and adds on to our already tight muscles. You see the cycle?

Another thing that leads to a weaker core is pregnancy and childbirth, your core is pretty much moved out of the way during this time and left greatly weakened after giving birth which puts your already back under more stress just after it has been through rather a lot! Which is why it's really important that 6 week mark after your bundle of joy has arrived that you start to build your core up again.

Also, a big shout out to all you cardio fans out there, all you runners, swimmers, cyclists. Yes you may be super fit, but are you working on your core strength too? If you do, that's awesome. But if not then try and add in some core work to your routine to help keep your body stable while you are burning up all that distance with your chosen mode of movement :) You should see an improvement in your times too.

Pilates and yoga are great providers of a good core workout, the New Zealand rugby team regularly practice yoga and if it's good enough for them it should definately work for us.

Also things like the Alexander Technique are great for getting your posture right, (good posture=stronger core) All those times your mum told you to stand up straight, she was right! And finally, this isn't about having a 6 pack, it's about the general health and strength of your body, take are of it, it's the only place you have to live.
